A Reminder of the CSP's Impact

I was watching this video the other day and really enjoyed it!

This video actually reminds me of the impact the CSP has.  The CSP intervenes when the child is still super young.  And I am sure many stories like the one in the video have happened in the CSP as well!

In Review & What Now

The Compassion bloggers have been home from their trip to Uganda for about a week now.  However, I am sure they are struggling with how to not forget Uganda and all they saw their and how to live in the US as well.

In review, here are some of my favorite posts from the amazing bloggers.....

What We Need When We Are Uncertain - chatting at the sky - this post by Emily I thought was especially touching.  I really connected with the sister relationship and thought it was just beautifully written.

Why Today Was Spectacular in an Ordinary Way - this post echoes Emily's in the fact that her sister Myquillyn wrote it.  There is nothing ordinary about the story she shares.

Joy the Baker – This Place We Share - Joy blogs about food.  In this post, she talks about how she decided to say yes and go to Uganda.

What Good Dads Do | Shaun Groves - beautiful post with amazing photos.  Shaun leads the Compassion Bloggers' trips and does a wonderful job sharing all about that in his posts.

Letting Go of the Right Dream - in this post, Bri shares about what it is to let go of a dream....one that perhaps doesn't line up with the plan God has for your life.  Love this.

in which we are all under the same sky - chatting at the sky - Emily reminds us that we all see the same sky, and she challenges us to remember others who see this sky who are not as fortunate as us.

I believe that these last two posts show us exactly what do now.....

The Worst Mistake You Don't Know You're Making | Goins, Writer

Choosing the One You Least Expect - chatting at the sky

This time the Compassion Bloggers' had a goal of seeing 400 children sponsored through this trip.  Right now, they are just 5 children away from that.

Will you take a leap of faith and sponsor one child from Uganda today?

Dear God.....

Dear God,
Please help my dad.  He is sick.  Mom is scared because he can't work.  We don't have as much food as we used to have.  God, my mom goes to the mall* to find food for us.  There are many stray dogs that dig through the trash looking for food too.  I am scared, God, that we won't have enough to eat.  I remember when I was little, and sometimes it would be days between meals.  Please, God, make daddy well again.  Help him be able to work again.  Help mom not to worry.  Please, keep her safe from the dogs.
Thank You, God, for my Aunty Ruth.  She's my sponsor, and she helps me a lot.  Thank You that she writes me letters and sends me stickers.  It makes me so happy.  Thank You that she gives me food to eat at the project.  Please bless Aunty Ruth a lot, God, because she loves me so much.  Please keep her safe in all she does.
And God, would you help Mary too?  She doesn't have a sponsor yet.  She thinks that no one loves her.  But God, I know you love her.  Please make someone like Aunty Ruth sponsor Mary, so that she can get letters and feel loved too.  Thank You for all your blessings, especially Aunty Ruth and my tutors at the project.
In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.

Will you sponsor Mary?  (Mary represents all Compassion children waiting for a sponsor.)

Mom, when's supper? I'm starving!

STARVING

It's the word you use when you haven't eaten in a couple hours.  It's when you go to your kitchen and find a snack.

It's the feeling of hunger.  It's when your tummy grumbles.  It's the feeling you get when you want to eat.

It's the reality for 870 million people.  It's more than a feeling.  It's been more than a couple hours since they ate.

They are starving.

Their starvation will likely lead to disabilities and death.  They do not have enough food.

Almost 15% of people in developing countries are hungry - starving.  Starvation causes stunted growth (mental and physical) and other health problems.  Almost half of the deaths of children worldwide are caused by malnutrition, a result of not enough food.

By sponsoring a child, you stop that.  Starvation will not be a reality for the child anymore.  She may not still have as much food as you, but she will have nutritious food that will help her grow.

Save a child's life.  End starvation for a child.  Sponsor a child today.

A Sudden Inspiration

"When she can't be here, can I fill in?  I know all the lines to the whole play!"

"Let me think about it.  I'll let you know."

Ten minutes later.....

"What are you doing?"

"I am memorizing Prisoner 3's lines.  I am going to fill in for her."

"What?!  I was hoping to do that.  I already know the lines."

"Well, I wish you could.  I didn't want to do this, but she asked me to."

"Oh."

I try not to think too much.  I guess I am not good enough for her.  After all, I got the fewest lines in the whole, two-act play.  I tried so hard though, and my memorization, I believed, was perfect.  Every word I knew by heart, wasn't that and a willing girl enough?  No?

I spent many tears because of that.  Simply, without words spoken, I wondered why she didn't choose me.  Sure, I was the quiet girl, but I listened to every word she said and did my best.  I couldn't understand how I was still not enough.  I was less than.

Before the performance at home, I sat on my mom's bed and cried.....because I wasn't good enough.  In that moment, I remember my mom.  She's the one who told me that it wasn't me - I was great, but she had chosen differently because she had.

Now, years later, I look at these precious faces.  And I wonder, is someone telling them that it isn't their fault?  They are precious beyond worth and just because they live in poverty, it doesn't have anything to do with who they are.  Just because she doesn't have a sponsor yet, it doesn't mean that she is ugly.  No, she is still beautiful and precious, but does she ever hear those words?

I don't know what her life is like, but I do know one thing - her life will be changed when a person across the world tells her that she is valued.  Will you tell a her that today?

Things have been a little busy here.  My mom and sister have been sick, so I get to watch the baby more.  That doesn't leave much time for posting.  I am going to combine and do a big "mail call" on Monday.

When I am stuck at home, I will go

When there are bloggers in Nicaragua, and Ann Voskamp is in Uganda, when your friend just came back from the Dominican Republic, and your other friend is getting ready to fly to Mexico again, you begin to wonder if you will ever go.  You read the posts and stories.  You see the photos, the smiles.  And you are so happy for them.  But you wonder, will it ever be me?  Will I ever go?

And right now, that's me.  I sit here and wonder, and I don't know.  But I wish and dream and pray and hope and think.

I wonder if I will ever go.  My heart longs to be in Mexico or Ecuador or Uganda.  I want to live with them.  I don't want to see them on my screen.  I am tired of hearing about it.  I want to do it.  I want to live with the poor.

I want to live with them.

I want to eat what they eat.  I want to not care about what I will wear or do.  I just want to love on the little kids.  I want to play with them.  I want to tell them face-to-face that I love them.  And that Jesus loves them. I want to be with them and love on them and just live among them.

But right now, I can't.  Right now, I stare into my screen and I am transported to Nicaragua or Uganda.  And I struggle.  Because I long to be where they are, I get kinda get jealous.  I see the people who go.  Some are semi-famous.  Others have blogs with 1000s of followers.  They write eloquently and inspire others.

Me?  Nope, I am not like them.  I am just a teen girl trying to make a difference, trying to live for Jesus, live like Jesus.

But I don't want to be the hands and feet of Jesus in my home.  I don't want to help my sister study or my mom clean the pool.  I don't want to pick up the yard....or my room.  I don't want to make supper.

No, I want to go.  When I want to sell all I have and go, I can't.  I have to stay.  I have to let others transport me over oceans and deserts now.

Cause until I can learn how to live like Jesus when I have more than I need, how can I go and live like Him when I am tired and worn?  When I have no energy and people still get on my nerves?

So for now, I sit and I stare.  I look and I cry.  And I write my letters, because I can love on them from here for now.

And right now, some lovely bloggers are taking me to Nicaragua.

Malaria

Halo! (Indonesian for "hello")  My name is Millie the mosquito.  I live in Indonesia, near Waingapu.  I am a young girl, so I am not very smart.  I learn something new everyday.  On Thursday, I learned the most important, life-changing thing-

My bite kills.

I didn't know that.  When I nibbled on the little girls and boys, I didn't know I was hurting them.  On Thursday, I saw many white nets hanging over the beds.  What were they?  I couldn't get past them.  So I listened in.

The little girl's name was Kartini.  She was in a bed with her sister Flora.  Flora didn't know what the net was either.  Kartini explained that mosquitoes, like me, carried a dangerous sickness.  It was called malaria.  Malaria makes people very ill, and sometimes they even die.  It made me very sad.

So I decided to snack on flowers now, and I hope that you other mosquitoes join me.

For all you people (not mosquitoes), you can help too!  Six hundred, fifty-five thousand people died from malaria last year.  Many of them were children.  Many of them lived in Sub-Sahara Africa.  However, even in places like Indonesia, people are at risk.

Please help stop this!!  It is preventable.  You can visit Compassion's page on malaria for more info and ways to help.

Here's to eradicating malaria!

He Who Refreshes Will Be Refreshed

As some of you may know, I am reading through Proverbs this month.  I also did that in November.  When I read it in November, I hilighted all the verses that talked about the poor, justice, and generosity.  There were quite a lot!

Reading it through again this month, I noticed the verses that talked about those things again.  I really like them.  I find them encouraging.  The verses encourage me to always be generous.  The verses remind me of all the times God has provided for me to help others.

One person gives freely, yet gains even more;
another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty.
A generous person will prosper;
whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.
Proverbs 11:24-25

Proverbs 11:25 is one of my favorites.  It says "whoever refreshes others will be refreshed."  Refresh means to give strength or energy (or so Google says).

I think one of the best way to "refresh" someone is to sponsor a child with Compassion.  I will tell you from my experiences- when I give strength by writing and sponsoring my kids, I am refreshed when I get their letters.  I am full of energy when I see one of those cream envelopes.  When I read their words and see their writing, I know that two lives are being changed (mine and theirs).

Will you please consider sponsoring a child and being refreshed?

Give hope

Remember how the Compassion Bloggers are attempting to raise $20,000 for children in poverty this Christmas?  Let me tell you simply that we have not raised that much yet.

However, I know that God can do great things.  I know He could raise even more than $20,000 in a much shorter amount of time than four days.  I pray that God lays it on many people's heart to donate to Compassion's Gift Catalog this week.

If each blog raises $100, we will meet our goal.  So I am asking you, will you please give hope this Christmas?  If eight people gave $12.50 each, it would make $100.  Please, click this link and give hope to a child this Christmas.  Your gift will change a child's life.  In turn, his/her family will be changed.  Then the whole community will be different just because of your small gift!

Biblical Giving

Today, we are going to explore giving, specifically what the Bible says about it.  When I thought about Biblical giving, two verses came to mind-
They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need.  -Acts 2:45
For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability.  -2 Corinthians 8:3
While there are other verses about giving, I am sure, these come to mind for me. Perhaps it is because I have been reading the New Testament lately or maybe I heard a sermon about them. However, I think that is not why. I think these verses stuck with me for one reason- they show true generosity.

No, I am not saying that we should go and sell all we have.  But as Matthew West says in his song "My Own Little World" (which I recommend you listen to), "I throw a twenty in the plate but I never give 'til it hurts."

I think we all have a tendency to keep a protective blanket on our money.  You know, give some, but keep some just in case we don't have enough.  When I read the verses above, it seems to me that the people were not doing that.  Not only were they giving some but all- their stuff too.

During Christmastime, I think we should not focus on just giving gifts.  I believe we should give our time and talents too.  We have all been gifted uniquely.

Perhaps you would like to help a family in poverty this Christmas.  By giving them some essentials, we could help them notice their gifts.  Maybe schoolroom would inspire a child to become a teacher or writer.

Help us raise $20,000 for children in poverty this Christmas.

What does it mean to me?

Giving.

This month Compassion bloggers are blogging about giving because, after all, it's all about giving.  Christmas is all about gifts.  Not only the gifts we exchange with our friends and family, but the Gift, our Savior.

To me, giving means living a life for God.

God is love.  When I love someone, I want to do everything I can for them.  I will give of myself and my time for them.

James even tells us that perfect religion is giving-
Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.  -James 1:27
By giving time, money, energy, food, etc., we can look after others.  James specifically says to look after orphans and widows, basically those who do not have the means to look after themselves.

Jesus says that whatever we do for others, we do for Him-
Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me. -Matthew 25:40
Consequently, whatever we do not do for others, we don't do for Him-
Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me. -Matthew 25:45
How can you help the "least of these?"

You can join me and many others in raising $20,000 for children in poverty!

You know how you feel when you give the gift that you know the receiver has been waiting for?  When you give that gift, it is worth every second you have spent working on it and thinking about it.  That is how you will feel when you give the gift of life to families in poverty.

To do that, go HERE.

Compassion's Christmas Gift catalog has many different gifts to help children and their families in poverty.  As I always say, every dollar counts!  No matter if it is one dollar or fifty, it can and will change a life!

Back Home

Hello!!

I am back from Peru, figuratively speaking.  I followed the Compassion Bloggers' trip to Peru this week.  They came home last night.

Some posts made me smile.  Some made me cry.  All of them have changed how I think of Peru.  They all reassured me that Compassion is who they say they are.

I am sure you followed along like I suggested.  However if you did not, here are some of the most touching posts (in my opinion)-

Formed For Flight by Shaun Groves
Open by Angie Smith
(they visited the same family)

Boys Will Be Boys, but... (Peru: Day 3) by Jennifer Schmidt

Woven by Angie Smith

These posts are some of the highlights, so I really encourage you to read all of them HERE.

After reading some of their words, please look at the kids in Peru looking for sponsors HERE.  You know their lives are hard.  You have seen their beautiful home.  So... Will you pray for one?  Or will you sponsor one?  Or will you write the one you already have?

Who have you chosen?

Change a life of a child in Peru!
