Pupusas

Pupusas are a traditional Salvadoran food.  My sweet Eduardito (Mainor) mentioned that he enjoys eating them during the Independence Day celebration.  When I saw the recipe in an El Salvador info booklet, I couldn't resist trying it!

They were a lot of fun to make, and I plan on making them every once in a while. :)

First you need masa harina (it's similar to corn flour)....or corn meal.  I used corn meal.  You also need warm water and filling (meat and/or cheese).

2 cups masa harina
1-1.5 cups warm water
meat/cheese
salsa/sour cream

Mix the masa harina with water.

The dough needs to be mold-able.  Add more water than you think you need.  You'll be happier with the result.

Roll a bit of the dough into a gold ball sized ball.  Then carefully press the center into a bowl shape.

Fill the "bowl" with meat and cheese.  Fill it completely.  (I use about 3 times as much filling as shown total.)

Then, push the dough back together, covering the filling.  Press it out to about one-quarter inch thick.

Do everything with your hands.  Don't set the pupusas down.

Then place in a pre-heated skillet.  I can cook one side in the time it takes for me to make another pupusa, maybe 3-4 minutes.  Check it.  It should be kinda crispy and the cheese should be melted.  Then flip it and cook for the same amount of time on the other side.

After they have finished cooking, eat them with salsa or sour cream.

Have you made a food from your sponsored child's country?

  1. How fun,and they sound delicious!!I have attempted some rice dishes, however it seems quite a few of the recipes I wanna make take some special ingredient that we don't have on hand or I don't even know where to find it!I might try these, even though I don't have a child in El savador,my Mom usually likes when I offer to cook anyhow!;)Thanks for sharing!

    1. They're great! This is the first on I have tried. You're right, so many of the other ones take a special ingredient or something. Let me know if you try it! :)

  2. mmmm looks super yummy! :)

although i don't have a child there, i made a rwandan ugali & bean dish for french class this past year. it turned out pretty good and it was pretty cool to be able to experience a little of what our sponsored kids in africa eat - happyness has told me she eats ugali.

my mom has cooked some food from compassion countries before for dinner - always so good. :) empanadas are a food from the philippines (and i think south american countries as well), which she & my dad ate growing up, and they were soooo good. :)

    1. That is so cool that you made ugali, and that Happyness eats it too :) I do think empanadas are South American as well. I bet you get to eat a lot of neat PH dishes! I think it is so awesome that you can learn about the PH from your parents' experiences :)

  3. Yummy! Looks like it was fun... and delicious! Unfortunately I have dietary restrictions and haven't seen a recipe from one of Compassion's countries I can eat :( it must be special to eat something they make and eat.

    1. I bet your Fadi will love knowing that you ate her favorite meal :) A lot of my kiddos say that their favorite food is "rice," or "rice and meat," or "rice and sauce," and so on. So whenever I eat rice, i always think of my kiddos :)
